Destinations Overview
The Scenic Highlands to Plains Circuit offers the most dramatic geographical contrasts of any Kenyan safari. We have meticulously paced this expedition to ensure you spend multiple nights in every region, allowing you to completely immerse yourself in the changing climates without the exhaustion of constant travel.
The journey begins with an exclusive “urban safari” in Nairobi, where you are given ample time to rest before encountering rhinos against a backdrop of city skyscrapers in Nairobi National Park, hand-feeding endangered Rothschild giraffes, and visiting orphaned baby elephants.
Leaving the city, the route climbs sharply into the cool, misty, and densely forested altitudes of the central highlands for a two-night retreat. Here, in Aberdare National Park (or the foothills of Mount Kenya), the safari experience completely transforms. You will spend one night relaxing at a luxurious highland country club, and a second night in an iconic “tree lodge” nestled deep in the forest canopy. Here, you can observe rare wildlife like the giant forest hog, elephants, and leopards as they emerge from the thick vegetation to drink at floodlit waterholes right below your balcony.
From the chilly alpine forests, the journey descends spectacularly into the Great Rift Valley for two nights at Lake Nakuru National Park. This shimmering lake is a vibrant haven for flamingos, pelicans, and a highly protected sanctuary for Black and White Rhinos.
Finally, the expedition sweeps southward into the Masai Mara National Reserve for a three-night finale. Trading the dense montane forests for limitless, sun-drenched, golden savannahs, the Mara is globally celebrated for its unrivaled Big Cat population and the thundering Great Wildebeest Migration. This transit is incredibly ideal because it provides a complete sensory shift taking you from wearing a fleece jacket in a misty forest canopy to wearing short sleeves on the warm, open plains, all in one perfectly paced journey.
Preserving the Ecosystem
At Maudie Safaris, we ensure your journey actively protects the diverse landscapes you traverse. In Nairobi, your visits to the Giraffe Centre and Sheldrick Wildlife Trust directly fund the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned elephants and endangered Rothschild giraffes.
In the central highlands, the Aberdares and Mount Kenya serve as the vital “water towers” of the country, supplying the rivers that sustain the wildlife downstream. Your park fees help the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) protect this dense, fragile forest ecosystem and fund conservation efforts for the critically endangered Mountain Bongo antelope. In Lake Nakuru, your visit supports the intensive, heavily guarded rhino sanctuary operations. Finally, in the Masai Mara, we partner exclusively with eco-camps that prioritize solar power and fund Maasai community conservancies, ensuring the indigenous people directly benefit from the protection of East Africa’s most iconic predators.
