Destination Overview

Akagera National Park is a conservation miracle. At Maudie Safaris, we tell the story of Akagera with immense pride; it is a testament to nature’s resilience. Located along the Tanzanian border, this park offers a stark contrast to the misty forests of the north. Here, the “Land of a Thousand Hills” gives way to golden savannahs, rolling highlands, and a labyrinth of swamps and lakes fed by the Akagera River.

As Central Africa’s largest protected wetland, Akagera is Rwanda’s answer to the classic savannah safari. It is the only place in the country where you can see the “Big Five” (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and Rhinoceros) roaming the wild. We specialize in “slow safaris” here, encouraging guests to appreciate the landscape as much as the wildlife. The park is visually stunning, transitioning from acacia woodlands in the south to the wide-open Kilala Plains in the north. Whether you are watching a fish eagle hunt over Lake Ihema or tracking a pride of lions, Akagera delivers an intimate and uncrowded safari experience.

Preserving the Ecosystem

Akagera is a shining example of successful conservation management through the partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks. Once depleted by human encroachment, the park has been restored to its former glory.

Maudie Safaris champions this restoration. The reintroduction of lions in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017 has re-established the ecological balance. By visiting Akagera with us, you contribute to the ongoing anti-poaching efforts and community engagement programs that ensure the local people see value in protecting these animals. We are particularly careful with our waste management and driving ethics to ensure this recovering ecosystem continues to thrive for generations to come.
