Destination Overview
The Serengeti is the crown jewel of Tanzania and perhaps the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world. At Maudie Safaris, we often tell our guests that while other parks are destinations, the Serengeti is an emotion. The name comes from the Maasai word Siringit, meaning “the place where the land runs on forever,” and standing on the bonnet of a Land Cruiser scanning the golden horizon, you will understand why.
It is a stage for the “Greatest Show on Earth”, the Great Migration of over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle. But beyond the migration, the Serengeti offers an abundance of resident wildlife that is unmatched in Africa. From the granite Kopjes (rocky outcrops) that serve as lookout points for lions to the riverine forests concealing leopards, the sheer scale and density of life here is overwhelming. It is raw, wild, and incredibly beautiful.
Preserving the Ecosystem
The Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is one of the oldest and most complex on the planet. It is a fragile balance of predator and prey, rainfall and drought. Maudie Safaris is committed to responsible tourism in this high-traffic park. We prioritize camps that are eco-certified and utilize solar power to minimize their carbon footprint on the plains.
By visiting the Serengeti with us, you are directly contributing to the conservation of the endangered Black Rhino (specifically the protection zones around Moru Kopjes) and supporting community outreach programs that discourage poaching by providing sustainable economic alternatives to the villages bordering the park.
Highlights
- The Great Migration: Witnessing the thundering herds is a bucket-list experience. We track their movement to position you in the heart of the action (Calving in the South or River Crossings in the North).
- Big Cat Capital: The Serengeti holds one of the largest lion populations in Africa. It is also the best place to see cheetahs sprinting across the short grass plains.
- Moru Kopjes: These massive granite boulders rising from the plains are not only scenic but are the favorite napping spots for lions and the territory of the elusive Black Rhino.
- Hot Air Balloon Safari: Floating silently over the awakening plains at dawn, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush, is the ultimate romantic safari experience.
- Retima Hippo Pool: A chance to get out of the vehicle and watch hundreds of hippos grunting and jostling for space in the river bends.
- Olduvai Gorge: Located just outside the park, this is the "Cradle of Mankind" where some of the earliest human fossils were discovered (often a stop en route).
