Destination Overview

Tarangire National Park is often overshadowed by the Serengeti, but at Maudie Safaris, we consider it the unsung hero of the Tanzanian Northern Circuit. Named after the Tarangire River that flows through it, this park is a landscape of ancient grandeur. It is famous for two giants: the massive African Elephants and the grotesque, beautiful Baobab trees that dot the horizon like upside-down roots.

During the dry season, the river becomes the only permanent water source in the region, drawing thousands of animals from the surrounding Maasai Steppe. The concentration of wildlife along the riverbanks rivals that of the Ngorongoro Crater, yet with far fewer tourist vehicles. It is a park of texture and color red earth, green palms, grey trunks, and blue skies offering a truly “wild” aesthetic.

Preserving the Ecosystem

Tarangire is a vital part of the larger Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem. It serves as a crucial dry-season refuge for migratory wildlife. However, human encroachment on migration corridors is a threat. Maudie Safaris supports lodges and camps that work directly with local communities to keep these ancient corridors open. By visiting Tarangire, you are funding the protection of the Baobab trees some of which are over 1,000 years old and supporting anti-poaching units that protect the park’s famous “Super Tuskers” (elephants with exceptionally large tusks).

Highlights

  • Elephant Paradise: Tarangire hosts the largest population of elephants in Tanzania. Seeing herds of up to 300 individuals digging in the dry riverbed is a common sight.
  • The Ancient Baobabs: Known as the "Tree of Life," these massive succulents create a prehistoric atmosphere and provide shelter for many species.
  • The Tarangire River: The lifeline of the park. In the dry season, predators line the banks waiting for thirsty herbivores.
  • Silale Swamp: A massive green sponge in the south of the park that attracts huge herds of buffalo and elephant, as well as tree-climbing pythons.
  • Birdwatcher’s Haven: With over 550 bird species recorded, including the endemic Ashy Starling and the Yellow-collared Lovebird, it is a birder’s paradise.
  • Tree-Climbing Lions: While famous in Manyara, Tarangire lions are also frequently spotted lounging in the branches of sausage trees to escape the heat and tsetse flies.
