Destination Overview

Deep in the heart of the Great Rift Valley lie two lakes that couldn’t be more different, despite being neighbors. Lake Bogoria is a “soda lake,” a dramatic, caustic environment where millions of pink flamingos congregate and geysers erupt from the earth’s crust. It is a place of raw, volcanic beauty backed by the towering Siracho Escarpment.

Just a short drive away, Lake Baringo offers a freshwater contrast. Surrounded by mountains, Baringo is a verdant oasis and one of the premier birdwatching destinations in the world, home to over 450 species. Its chocolate-colored waters are dotted with volcanic islands and inhabited by hippos, crocodiles, and the iconic African Fish Eagle. At Maudie Safaris, we bridge these two worlds, taking you from the steaming geysers of Bogoria to the tranquil boat rides of Baringo.

Preserving the Ecosystem

These lakes are fragile ecosystems under pressure from fluctuating water levels and climate change. Maudie Safaris works closely with local community conservancies, such as the Ruko Community Conservancy, which has successfully reintroduced giraffes to the area. By visiting these lakes, you contribute to community-led conservation projects that protect the shoreline habitats and the vital nesting grounds for rare birds and reptiles. We advocate for responsible boating and “leave-no-trace” visits to the sensitive hot springs.
