Destination Overview

Ernest Hemingway once described Lake Manyara as “the loveliest I had seen in Africa,” and at Maudie Safaris, we tend to agree. Often underestimated due to its size, this park offers a microcosm of the Tanzanian safari experience. It is a place of dramatic contrasts: upon entering the gate, you are immediately enveloped by a lush groundwater forest fed by underground springs, teeming with troops of baboons and blue monkeys.

As you move deeper, the forest gives way to the grassy floodplain and, finally, the shimmering alkaline lake itself. We recommend this destination as the perfect introduction to the Northern Circuit. It is famous for two unique phenomena: the legendary tree-climbing lions, which lounge on acacia branches to escape the heat and tsetse flies, and the massive flocks of pink flamingos that turn the lake shoreline into a ribbon of pink. We specialize in “slow safaris” here taking the time to appreciate the incredible birdlife (over 400 species) and the unique geological features of the Great Rift Valley.

Preserving the Ecosystem

Lake Manyara is a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve, yet it is a fragile ecosystem. The lake’s water levels fluctuate naturally, but they are also threatened by upstream agriculture and siltation. The park serves as a critical corridor for elephants moving between the Tarangire and Ngorongoro ecosystems.

Maudie Safaris supports initiatives in the nearby Mto wa Mbu community that promote sustainable agriculture and reduce human-wildlife conflict. We prioritize lodges that manage their wastewater responsibly to prevent contamination of the groundwater forest. By visiting with us, you contribute to the economic value of the park, ensuring that the migration corridors for the famous Manyara elephants remain open and protected.

Highlights

  • Tree-Climbing Lions: A rare behavioral adaptation unique to this park (and Queen Elizabeth NP in Uganda), spotting these predators high in the trees is a photographer's dream.
  • The Pink Ribbon: Witness thousands of Lesser and Greater Flamingos feeding in the shallows of the soda lake.
  • Groundwater Forest: Drive through a jungle-like forest filled with rushing streams, ancient mahogany trees, and the highest concentration of baboons in the world.
  • Maji Moto Hot Springs: Visit the bubbling, sulfur-rich hot springs at the southern end of the park.
  • Mto wa Mbu Culture: Experience one of the most culturally diverse villages in Africa, where over 120 tribes live harmoniously.
  • Canopy Walkway: Experience Tanzania’s first treetop walkway, suspending you 18 meters above the ground for an eagle's-eye view of the forest.
