Destination Overview
Tsavo is Kenya’s largest protected area, a massive wilderness split into two distinct personalities by the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. Tsavo East is a land of vast, flat semi-arid plains and the iconic red-dusted elephants. It feels endless, dominated by the Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow and the life-giving Galana River.
Tsavo West offers a dramatic contrast. It is a volcanic wonderland of ancient lava flows (Shetani), lush springs (Mzima), and craggy hills. Here, the landscape is more intimate and mountainous, providing a home for the elusive leopard and the protected rhinos of the Ngulia Sanctuary. At Maudie Safaris, we combine these two parks to give you a “complete” safari experience that moves from the open savannah to the heart of volcanic mountains.
Preserving the Ecosystem
Tsavo is a critical stronghold for Kenya’s “Super Tuskers” – elephants with tusks so large they touch the ground. Maudie Safaris supports conservation efforts like the Tsavo Trust and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which operates several orphan reintegration units in the area. Your visit helps fund the aerial surveillance and anti-poaching teams required to protect this massive territory.
