Destination Overview

Established in 1946, Nairobi National Park is Kenya’s oldest park. Spanning 117 square kilometers, it is incredibly diverse, ranging from open grass plains to acacia bush and a permanent riverine forest. Despite its proximity to the city (only 7km from the CBD), it is a fully functioning ecosystem.

We recommend this park for those who want a high-impact safari experience without leaving the city. It is one of the most successful sanctuaries for Black Rhinos in the world, and sightings of these endangered giants are more frequent here than almost anywhere else. From lions and leopards to buffalo and giraffes, the “City Park” offers a concentrated dose of the wild that never fails to surprise even the most seasoned safari-goers.

Preserving the Ecosystem

The park is a “fenceless” sanctuary on its southern border, allowing wildlife to migrate to and from the Athi-Kapiti plains. However, urban sprawl and infrastructure pose a significant threat. Maudie Safaris supports the Friends of Nairobi National Park (FONNAP) and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which is located on the park’s edge.

Your visit helps justify the continued protection of this land against industrial development. We also highlight the historical significance of the Ivory Burning Site Monument, where Kenya’s presidents have multiple times set fire to tons of confiscated ivory, sending a powerful message to the world that “a tusk has no value unless it is on an elephant.

Safari Highlights

  • Rhino Haven: One of the best places in Africa to see the near-extinct Black Rhino in the wild.
  • The Backdrop: Capture the iconic "Nairobi Shot"—a giraffe or lion with the city skyline behind it.
  • The Big Four: Spot Lion, Leopard, Rhino, and Buffalo (Elephants are the only members of the Big Five not present due to the park's size)
  • Birding Paradise: Over 400 species of birds, including the regal Secretary Bird and several species of vultures
  • Ivory Burning Site: Visit the historic location that defined Kenya’s commitment to ending the ivory trade
