Destinations Overview
The Rift Valley Express is the quintessential Kenyan safari circuit, charting a course from the vibrant capital through the dramatic Great Rift Valley, and culminating in the world-famous Masai Mara. We have meticulously designed this itinerary with a “slow safari” philosophy, ensuring multi-night stays at every destination so you can immerse yourself in the wild without ever feeling rushed.
The adventure begins in Nairobi, where you will enjoy an exclusive “urban safari” and ample time to beat jet lag. Here, you will encounter rhinos against a backdrop of city skyscrapers in Nairobi National Park, hand-feed endangered Rothschild giraffes, and visit orphaned baby elephants.
From the city, you descend into the Great Rift Valley for a two-night retreat at Lake Naivasha, a shimmering freshwater oasis surrounded by yellow-barked acacia trees. Naivasha is a haven for hundreds of bird species and massive pods of hippos. Just next door lies Hell’s Gate National Park, renowned for its towering cliffs, deep gorges, and geothermal steam vents landscapes so striking they inspired the scenery of The Lion King.
The journey then ascends into the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya’s crown jewel, where you will spend three incredible nights. The Mara is a limitless expanse of golden, rolling savannahs, universally celebrated for its exceptional population of Big Cats (lions, leopards, and cheetahs) and for playing host to the thundering herds of the Great Wildebeest Migration.
This transit route is incredibly ideal because it perfectly breaks up the long drive between Nairobi and the Masai Mara. By stopping at Lake Naivasha for two nights, travelers get to step out of the safari vehicle, enjoy a peaceful boat ride, walk past grazing zebras, and lounge by the lodge pool providing a highly active yet deeply refreshing prelude before settling into the intensive 4×4 game drives of the Masai Mara.
Preserving the Ecosystem
At Maudie Safaris, conservation dictates how we travel. In Nairobi, your visits to the Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust directly fund breeding programs for the endangered Rothschild giraffe, as well as the rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration of orphaned elephants back into the wild.
In the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha’s delicate freshwater ecosystem faces immense pressure from agriculture. By booking this safari, you support eco-lodges that strictly regulate their water usage and protect the riparian zones crucial for hippo and bird habitats. Finally, in the Masai Mara, your park and concession fees are vital. They fund the anti-poaching units protecting the dense predator populations and support the surrounding Maasai community conservancies. This ensures that the indigenous Maasai people directly reap the economic benefits of tourism, incentivizing the long-term protection of the wildlife that shares their ancestral lands.
