Destination Overview
Often referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa” due to its terraced hills and cool climate, Lake Bunyonyi is a place of breathtaking serenity. At Maudie Safaris, we often recommend this destination as the perfect “decompression zone” after the physical exertion of Gorilla trekking in nearby Bwindi.
Located in southwestern Uganda, it is believed to be the second-deepest lake in Africa. Unlike many African lakes, Bunyonyi is free from bilharzia, hippos, and crocodiles, making it one of the few water bodies where you can swim safely. Dotted with 29 emerald islands, each with its own legend, the lake offers a magical landscape of shifting mists and glassy waters. It is a place to slow down, breathe the fresh highland air, and listen to the chatter of the weavers and sunbirds that give the lake its name.
Preserving the Ecosystem
Lake Bunyonyi is a vital water source and a hub of biodiversity, particularly for avian life. However, the steep agricultural terraces surrounding the lake pose a risk of soil erosion and siltation. Maudie Safaris partners with lodges and boat operators who practice eco-friendly tourism. By visiting Bunyonyi, you support the local Bakiga and Batwa communities who rely on the lake for transport and fishing. We encourage cultural tours that provide direct income to island schools and community craft centers, discouraging unsustainable farming practices near the water’s edge.
Highlights
- Island Hopping: Explore the lake’s famous 29 islands, including Akampene (Punishment Island) with its dark history, and Upside Down Island.
- Dugout Canoeing: Experience the traditional mode of transport used by locals for centuries. Gliding silently on the water is the best way to soak in the views.
- Birdwatching: True to its name ("Place of many little birds"), the lake is home to over 200 species, including the Pied Kingfisher and the Grey Crowned Crane.
- Safe Swimming: Enjoy a refreshing dip in the bilharzia-free fresh water.
- Hiking & Views: Hike to the Arcadia Viewpoint for a panoramic shot of the serpentine lake winding through the hills.
