Destination Overview
Bwindi is not a safari; it is a pilgrimage. At Maudie Safaris, we regard the hour spent with the Mountain Gorillas as the most profound wildlife encounter available on the planet. Located in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley, Bwindi is one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests, dating back over 25,000 years.
This is a physical destination. The “Impenetrable” name is earned; the terrain is steep, the vegetation is dense, and the mist hangs heavy over the canopy. Unlike the open savannahs of Kenya, here you are immersed in a world of ferns, vines, and giant mahogany trees. While it is famous for housing half of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorilla population, it is also a sanctuary for 120 mammal species and over 350 bird species. It is challenging, humid, and muddy, but the moment you look into the eyes of a Silverback, every step of the hike becomes worth it.
Preserving the Ecosystem
Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its survival is inextricably linked to the community. The gorillas here are highly susceptible to human diseases.
Maudie Safaris strictly adheres to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) guidelines. By purchasing a Gorilla Trekking Permit, you are directly funding the conservation of the forest and the protection of these gentle giants against poaching. We also encourage hiring a local porter at the trailhead. This provides direct, sustainable income to the local villagers, discouraging reliance on forest resources and turning former poachers into protectors of the park.
