Destination Overview
Mount Meru is the dramatic, volcanic centerpiece of this national park. Standing at 4,562 meters, it is Africa’s fifth-highest mountain and a spectacular sight with its massive horseshoe-shaped crater. The park is a lush green oasis, offering a stark contrast to the golden savannas found elsewhere in Tanzania. It is home to an incredible array of ecosystems, from the alkaline Momella Lakes to the dense montane forests and the stark, alpine desert near the summit.
At Maudie Safaris, we recommend Mount Meru National Park for travelers who appreciate the “vertical” safari experience. Here, the biodiversity changes with every few hundred meters of ascent. You will encounter the striking Black and White Colobus monkeys in the canopy, giraffes gliding through the “Small Serengeti,” and buffaloes grazing near the Tululusia Waterfalls. We specialize in “immersion safaris,” combining traditional vehicle-based game viewing with guided bush walks that bring you face-to-face with the mountain’s residents.
Preserving the Ecosystem
Mount Meru is a vital water catchment area for the surrounding plains, but its delicate alpine environment and forest belts are sensitive to human encroachment and climate shifts. Maudie Safaris is committed to the protection of this volcanic landscape. We actively support local reforestation projects on the mountain’s lower slopes to maintain the migratory corridors for the resident elephant populations.
Your visit contributes to the sustainable management of the park’s resources and the employment of local guides who are experts in the mountain’s unique flora. We partner exclusively with lodges that implement grey-water recycling and solar energy systems, ensuring that your stay on the slopes of Meru supports the conservation of this ancient volcano.
