Destination Overview
Meru National Park is Kenya’s best-kept secret, a wild, beautiful, and completely uncrowded frontier. Straddling the equator and bisected by 13 permanent rivers, this is a landscape of high grass, lush swamps, and dramatic doum palms. It is famously known as the home of “Elsa the Lioness,” immortalized in the book and film Born Free.
Unlike the more famous parks, Meru offers a sense of “true” Africa. It feels like a private kingdom where you can drive for hours without seeing another vehicle. At Maudie Safaris, we invite you to explore this rugged paradise where the Big Five roam through diverse habitats, ranging from the volcanic slopes of the Nyambeni Range to the wide, brown Tana River.
Preserving the Ecosystem
Meru is a triumph of conservation. After facing heavy poaching in the 1980s, it has been restored to its former glory through the hard work of the Kenya Wildlife Service and partners like the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). Maudie Safaris is dedicated to promoting this park to ensure that sustainable tourism continues to fund the protection of its massive Rhino Sanctuary. By choosing Meru, you are supporting one of Kenya’s most successful ecological restoration stories, helping to protect both Black and White rhinos in a secure, natural stronghold.
