Destination Overview

The Central Highlands are the water towers of Kenya. Mount Kenya, an extinct volcano and Africa’s second-highest peak, is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique afro-alpine flora and rugged, snow-capped peaks. Below it lies the Aberdare Range, a mystical world of thick rainforests and open moorlands that look more like the Scottish Highlands than equatorial Africa.

We recommend this destination for those who want to see a different side of Kenya’s biodiversity. Here, we track the elusive Black Leopard, the critically endangered Mountain Bongo antelope, and massive forest elephants. At Maudie Safaris, we specialize in “forest therapy”combining traditional game drives with guided canopy walks and evening wildlife viewing from the comfort of a lodge deck overlooking a salt lick.

Preserving the Ecosystem

The forests of Mt Kenya and the Aberdares are vital for Kenya’s survival, providing water to millions of people. However, they face threats from illegal logging and human-wildlife conflict. Maudie Safaris is a proud supporter of Rhino Ark, a charitable trust that has built a 400km electric fence around the Aberdares to protect the forest and the communities living around it.

Your visit helps fund the protection of the Mountain Bongo and the restoration of indigenous forests. We work with lodges that use sustainable timber and hydroelectric power, ensuring that your presence in these “lungs of Kenya” leaves nothing but footprints.
